Terms & Conditions

What you agree to when you use GearGenius.

About these terms

These terms and conditions ("terms") are the agreement between you and us about your use of the GearGenius app and this website ("GearGenius", "the app", "the service").

They are written to be read. Where a section carries something you would want to know before agreeing, it says so in ordinary words rather than in capitals at the bottom of the page.

How we handle your data is a separate document. See the Privacy Policy.

Who these terms are with

GearGenius is provided by:

  • Name of the sole trader, established in Greece and trading as GearGenius: to be supplied
  • Registered address in Greece: to be supplied

"We", "us" and "our" mean that person. "You" means the person using GearGenius.

Agreeing to them

You agree to these terms when you create an account or use the app. If you do not agree to them, do not use GearGenius.

If you are using the app on behalf of a business, you are confirming that you are allowed to accept these terms for it, and they then bind the business as well as you.

Who can use GearGenius

You must be at least 13 years old. GearGenius is not intended for children under 13 and we do not knowingly hold their data.

Where you live, the age at which you can agree to a contract like this on your own may be higher than 13. If you are under it, you may use GearGenius only with the agreement of a parent or guardian, who accepts these terms with you.

You must also be able to enter into a binding agreement, and not be barred from doing so under the law that applies to you.

Your account

An account is yours and personal to you. Keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us if you think somebody else has got into your account.

What you tell the app should be true as far as you know it. A health score, a service schedule and a valuation are all worked out from figures you enter, so an odometer reading that is wrong produces answers that are wrong. That is arithmetic rather than a rule we are imposing, but it is worth saying plainly.

You are responsible for what happens under your account. We are not responsible for a loss caused by somebody else using it with your details, unless that was our fault.

What GearGenius does

GearGenius keeps a record of the vehicles you own and tells you what it works out from that record. In particular it:

  • Works out a health score out of 100 from the figures you have given it.
  • Keeps a maintenance schedule, and projects when each service falls due from your odometer and the dates you log.
  • Reminds you before a service is due, using your phone's own notifications.
  • Keeps your service history on your account rather than with a garage or a dealership.
  • Looks up published safety recalls for your make, model and year.
  • Finds garages, fuel and parts shops near you when you ask it to.
  • Answers questions about your vehicle through an assistant.
  • Works out what your vehicle costs to run from the fill-ups you log.
  • On the paid tier, estimates a value range, checks a repair quote against your own record, and guides you through a walkaround of a car you are thinking of buying.

What GearGenius is not

This is the most important section here, so it is near the top rather than buried.

GearGenius is an informational tool. It is not a mechanic, an inspection, a valuation, or professional advice of any kind. Nobody has looked at your car. What it tells you is worked out from figures you typed in, from published schedules, and, where you have plugged an adapter in, from what your vehicle's own computer recorded about itself. That last one is the car reporting, not a person inspecting: it says what the car noticed, never what somebody standing over it would find. A part can fail early no matter what an interval says, and a fault a sensor cannot see is a fault the app cannot see either.

Specifically:

  • The health score is arithmetic over five figures. It is not a roadworthiness test and it does not mean a vehicle is safe to drive.
  • The maintenance schedule uses conventional intervals, not your manufacturer's schedule for your exact vehicle. Where the two differ, your manufacturer's handbook is right and we are not.
  • The assistant is guidance. In its own words, it is not a substitute for a mechanic looking at the car.
  • Recall information is matched on make, model and year. It is not a check of whether your individual vehicle falls inside an affected serial range, and no part of the app claims that it is. Your manufacturer or a franchised dealer can tell you that; we cannot.
  • The Trade-In Oracle produces a range with its working shown. It is not a valuation, not an offer, and there is no market, listing or auction data behind it.
  • Second Opinion reads your logged history, not your car. It shows you which quoted lines your own record does not show as due, so you can ask a better question. It is not a judgement on the garage and it is not a reason on its own to refuse work.
  • Pre-Purchase Check is a walkaround you carry out yourself, plus a public registry lookup where one is available. It is not a professional pre-purchase inspection, and what it suggests taking off an asking price is a negotiating position rather than a repair estimate.
  • Part Finder shows shops near you. It does not fetch prices and it is not a diagnosis. If you intend to fit a part yourself, do so only with the proper mechanical knowledge and tools.
  • OBD-II diagnostics report what your vehicle's own computer says at the moment of the scan, through a third-party adapter. A fault code names a circuit or a symptom, not a repair, and a car with no stored codes can still have something wrong with it. What the app makes of a code is guidance, exactly as everywhere else.

Anything that affects your safety, or anything you are unsure about, should be looked at by somebody qualified. Decisions about repairing, driving, buying or selling a vehicle are yours.

Safety, and using the app in a vehicle

Do not use GearGenius while driving. Stop somewhere safe first. Obey the law where you are, which in most places prohibits handling a phone at the wheel.

You are responsible for the roadworthiness of your vehicle and for meeting whatever inspection, insurance and licensing rules apply where you live. Nothing the app tells you changes that, and a score of 100 is not evidence of anything to an inspector, an insurer or a court.

Emergency calls

The app can put an emergency number in front of you and hand it to your phone's dialler when you confirm. It is not an emergency service and it is not a substitute for one.

The number is chosen from the region your phone is set to, and it can be wrong: if you are travelling, or your device region does not match where you are, the number shown may not be the right one. The app shows it to you before anything happens so that you can check it. You can also set the number yourself in Settings.

The call is an ordinary telephone call made by your phone. It depends on your device, your battery, your network and your carrier, none of which are ours. In a real emergency, dial the local emergency number directly if there is any doubt at all.

The assistant

The assistant is generated by an artificial intelligence model. Like all such models it can be confidently wrong, and it can produce an answer that sounds specific to your vehicle when it is not.

Check anything that matters before you act on it, and treat anything touching your safety as a reason to speak to somebody qualified rather than to us.

There is a limit on how many messages an account may send in a day, which is higher on the paid tier. The limit exists so the assistant stays available and affordable for everybody, and we may change it.

Do not put anything into the assistant that you would not want processed by a third-party provider on our behalf, and do not use it to try to produce unlawful or harmful content. What is sent, and what is not, is set out in the Privacy Policy.

Free and Pro

GearGenius has a free tier and a paid subscription called Pro.

  • The free tier covers one vehicle, with its health score, its full maintenance schedule and history, reminders, recalls, running costs, Part Finder, Nearby, SOS and the assistant at a standard daily allowance.
  • Pro adds up to five vehicles, a stronger assistant with a higher allowance, the Trade-In Oracle, Second Opinion, Pre-Purchase Check, and OBD-II diagnostics under Car Insights.

OBD-II diagnostics need a Bluetooth LE adapter that you buy separately and that is nothing to do with us. We do not supply it, we do not endorse any particular one, and we are not responsible for what one does to your vehicle. Plugging anything into a vehicle's diagnostic port is at your own risk, and you should not leave a dongle connected while driving.

We may change what sits in each tier. If a change takes away something you are paying for, we will tell you before it happens and you may cancel.

Payment, renewal and cancelling

Apple and Google take the payment, not us. A subscription is bought through the App Store or Google Play, under their terms as well as these, and we never see your card or bank details.

  • The price is the one shown to you in the app at the moment you subscribe, in your own currency and including whatever tax applies where you are. That figure comes from your own app store.
  • Renewal. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each term unless you turn renewal off at least 24 hours before the term ends. Your store charges you within the 24 hours before each renewal.
  • A free trial, where one is offered, converts into a paid subscription at the end of the trial unless you turn renewal off before it ends. Any unused part of a trial is lost if you subscribe earlier.
  • Cancelling. You cancel in your own store account, in the subscription settings of your Apple or Google account. We cannot cancel it for you, and deleting your GearGenius account does not cancel it.
  • After cancelling you keep Pro until the end of the term you have paid for, and then the account returns to the free tier. Your data is not deleted; vehicles beyond the free tier's one become read-only rather than being removed.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies. We cannot issue one. If you believe you are entitled to a refund, ask your store.

If we change the price of a subscription, your store will tell you and ask you to agree before the new price is charged. If you do not agree, the subscription ends at the end of the current term.

What you put into the app

Your vehicles, your service history, your notes, your photographs and your messages to the assistant stay yours. We do not claim ownership of any of it.

You give us permission to hold it, copy it between your devices, back it up and process it, purely so the app can do what you installed it to do. That permission exists for no other purpose, it ends when you delete the content or your account, and it does not let us publish anything or use it to advertise.

You are responsible for having the right to put something into the app. Do not upload a photograph you do not have the right to use.

Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. We back the service up, but a backup is not the same promise as an archive, and deletion is deletion.

How you may use it

Use GearGenius for your own vehicles, lawfully. Do not:

  • Break into, probe or interfere with the service, other people's accounts, or the systems behind either.
  • Copy, scrape or resell what the app produces, or use it to build a competing product.
  • Take the app apart to get at a key, a prompt or an endpoint, or work around a limit, a paywall or an allowance.
  • Present anything the app produces as a professional inspection, a certified valuation, or a recall check on an individual vehicle, whether to a buyer, an insurer or anybody else.
  • Use the assistant to produce unlawful content, or to attempt anything the model is not meant to do.
  • Upload anything unlawful, or anything that infringes somebody else's rights.

If you break these rules we may limit or end your access. Where the breach is minor and fixable we will say so first.

Information from public databases

Some of what the app shows you comes from public vehicle and safety databases rather than from us: national road safety authorities, an EU safety alert system, a national vehicle registry, and the map service on your phone.

That information is theirs. It can be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, it is published in their own words and we do not translate or restate it, and we cannot correct it. Where a registry covers only one country, the app says so on the screen that uses it.

We are not responsible for what those sources say, for their availability, or for a decision you take on the strength of it. Where something matters, check it with the manufacturer, a franchised dealer, or the authority itself.

Availability and changes

We try to keep GearGenius working and available, but we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or fault-free. It depends on your device, your connection, your app store, and services run by other people.

We may change, add or remove features. We may stop offering the service altogether, in which case we will give you reasonable notice, let you get your data out, and refund the unused part of any subscription you have paid for.

Reminders are scheduled by your own phone. If notifications are switched off, the battery dies, the phone is off, or the operating system delays or drops a notification, a reminder may not arrive. Do not rely on the app alone for something that matters.

Ending your access

You can stop using GearGenius whenever you like, and you can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app: Settings, then your name at the top, then Delete my account.

We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if we are obliged to by law, or if keeping the account open would put other people or the service at risk. Unless the law prevents us, we will tell you why.

If we end your access for a reason that is not your fault, we will refund the unused part of any subscription you have paid us for directly. Where your store took the payment, ask your store.

What we promise, and what we do not

We will provide GearGenius with reasonable care and skill.

Beyond that, and as far as the law where you live allows, the service is provided as it is. We do not promise that it will meet your particular purpose, that what it works out will be accurate or complete, that it will always be available, or that a schedule, a score, a recall result or a valuation range will match what a qualified person would tell you about your actual vehicle.

Nothing in this section takes away a right you have as a consumer that cannot be taken away. See Your rights as a consumer.

Our responsibility to you

We do not limit our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Nothing below changes that.

Otherwise, and as far as the law allows:

  • We are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill.
  • We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable, for loss of profit, of business, of opportunity, or of data beyond what a reasonable backup on your side would have prevented.
  • We are not responsible for a repair you did or did not carry out, for a vehicle you bought or sold, for a price you agreed, or for a mechanical failure, on the strength of something the app told you.
  • Where we are responsible, our total liability to you for all claims taken together is limited to whichever is the greater of: the total amount you paid us for GearGenius in the twelve months before the claim arose, or one hundred euro (€100).

The floor is there on purpose. Most people use GearGenius without paying anything, and a cap set only at what you paid would come to nothing at all for them, which is the kind of cap a court sets aside.

Your rights as a consumer

These terms do not replace the rights the law gives you where you live, and they are not meant to. Where anything here conflicts with a right you have that cannot be signed away, that right wins and the rest of these terms carry on.

If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, you keep the consumer protections of the country you live in. That includes your statutory rights about digital content and services, and your right to cancel a distance contract within 14 days. Because a subscription gives you access immediately, starting to use Pro during those 14 days may reduce or end that cancellation right, and your app store will tell you how it applies to a purchase made through it.

If you are in the United States, you keep the consumer rights your state gives you, including under its own consumer protection and automatic-renewal laws. Some states do not allow certain limits on liability or on implied warranties, so parts of the two sections above may not apply to you.

Wherever you live, you can complain to us first and we will try to put it right.

Who owns what

GearGenius, its name, its design and the software behind it are ours. You get permission to use the app on devices you control, for your own purposes, for as long as you keep to these terms. That permission is personal, and you may not sell it, licence it on, or transfer it.

What you put in stays yours, as set out above.

Information taken from public databases belongs to the bodies that publish it, and the map results shown in Nearby and Part Finder belong to the map service that returned them.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. The date at the top of the page is the day they last changed.

If a change materially affects what you get or what you owe, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect, and you may stop using GearGenius and cancel a subscription rather than accept it. Carrying on using the app after a change takes effect means you accept it.

Governing law, and where a dispute goes

These terms, and any dispute arising out of them, are governed by the law of Greece, and the courts of Greece have jurisdiction.

That choice does not take away the protection of your own country's mandatory consumer law. If you are a consumer in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, you keep the protections of the country you live in, and you may bring a claim in your own local courts. If you are a consumer in the United States, you keep the rights your state gives you.

If something goes wrong, write to us first. Most things are settled that way and it costs neither of us anything.

If that does not settle it and you are a consumer in Greece, you may take the matter to the Consumer Ombudsman (Συνήγορος του Καταναλωτή), an independent authority whose service is free. If you are a consumer elsewhere in the EEA, your own country's alternative dispute resolution body is open to you, and the European Consumer Centre where you live will tell you which one and help with a cross-border complaint.

The European Commission's online dispute resolution platform is not an option for anybody any more: it closed on 20 July 2025 and the regulation behind it was repealed. An earlier version of these terms pointed at it, and that pointer is gone rather than left to send you to a dead page.
